Sure, the book is about biologically induced paranoia and unreliable behavior, so there’s some plot justification for everybody being untrustworthy, but the female characters were really bad. Like the similarly uninspiring Dead Lines,Vitals just seems small in comparison to many of Greg Bear’s other works, so I didn’t care for it.

Unfortunately for Hal and his twin brother Rob, who is independently conducting similar research, the success of their investigations could spell disaster for a mysterious organization known as Silk. Spiritual evil, bearr they say. Then, the mysterious Rudy Banning brings a package of information from Rob.
Bear has the doorman reading, one can only hope: VITALS is a powerful science fiction thriller that never slows down whether the tale is in a bathysphere on the ocean floor or in a lab. The damned Jews blocked me every step of the way.
Both Hal and Rob had been pursuing similar paths to immortality, involving research into bacteria that colonize our bodies and that factor greatly in human life span; this research has brought them both into contact with a vast conspiracy called Silk, engineered by ex-Soviet scientists, that permits mind control through bacterial manipulation, with the trigger bacteria now infecting much of the world’s population, including the U.
